Reasons for using a shoulder rest

The main reason for using a shoulder rest is to support the violin in a position that aids playing and good technique. It should allow the instrument to be supported between the chin and shoulder of the player enabling the players left hand to be as free as possible to move up and down the fingerboard. It also makes for greater comfort because it keeps the violin off the collar bone. Most high quality shoulder rests also allow the back of the violin to be free from the muting effect that can be caused by contact of the back with clothing when holding the violin without a shoulder rest.

Choosing a shoulder rest

It is important that the shoulder rest is held on the violin securely without damaging the violin. When selecting a shoulder rest, every player has different physical attributes and will likely prefer a particular shape/design of rest. The length of the players neck is particularly important to consider when choosing a shoulder rest.
