A diatonic harmonica is designed to produce only the notes of the scale to which they are tuned. For example a diatonic harmonica tuned to the key of C would produce all the natural notes of the C scale without any sharps or flats.
Each hole contains two reeds. One plays when the breath is exhaled (blown) the other when inhaled. The individual reeds are tuned to play a different note on the scale.
